| Yemanja is the spirit of the sea depicted as a woman and is often compared with the Catholic Mary, Mother of God. African deities were often fused with Catholic saints in post-slave trade Brazil through Macumba and Candon Bley - magic or, in other territories, voodoo. The spirit also represents Mother Earth, a sensual portrait of a feminine deity blissfully unaware of her own beauty. The 1983 cover was considered so sensual that it was banned by the Japanese. | |
